Artist Statement
Michael Johnson
My name is Michael Johnson…and I would say I’m best known for my portraits. I specialize in Vinyl Art. The majority of my pieces are constructed of broken vinyl records and Compact Disc. There are other artists that use records, but what sets my work apart is the use of layers and colored records. I feel that the layers and colors provide depth to the portrait and often can relay emotion. Today vinyl records are a thing of the past. Most of the new generation has never seen a record player or a real turntable. I feel that by me incorporating vinyl records into my art, I am giving them a second life…I look at my art as a way of bridging a gap in pop culture.
